MAY 24 2010

Considered as one of the most prestigious sporting events in the Virginia Beach, the Sandman Triathlon has attracted thousands of spectators and athletes who will have to complete the 1-kilometer swim, 14-mile bike, and 5-mile run course. Meanwhile, to qualify for this race, a participant should be aged at least 18 years old.

The Sandman Triathlon is a prestigious sports event in Virginia Beach that is always held in conjunction with the city’s Neptune Festival. Meanwhile, this year’s triathlon will be held in September 19 at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront.

According to the event organizers, the triathlon course will include 1-kilometer swim, 14-mile bike, and 5-mile run. And because the course is extremely challenging, participants under the age of 18 are prohibited to join the race.

Aside from the age requirements, these are the other qualifications for those who want to join the race:

Participants should pay the registration fees of $60 if they are members of the USA Triathlon or $70 if they are not. However, if they pay late (after August 9), they will have to pay an additional $10.

Participants should wear bike helmets, wet suits, and other sports apparel and equipment that meet the safety standards imposed by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and the USA Triathlon.

Participants should determine if they are physically fit and well-trained for the sporting event.

Participants are required to wear a small chip which can quickly and accurately obtain their speed and other developments during the race. According to the event organizer, this chip is worn on a Velcro strap around the participants’ ankle.

Meanwhile, this triathlon event is categorized into four:

Open Division

This division is comprised of highly competitive athletes who have trained for several years and have strong endurance. With this, the open division is not ideal for novice triathletes and beginners.

Age group Division

This division will be further split up in several categories based on the gender and age of the participants. In this way, a participant can compete only to those other racers of the same age and gender.

The age group division will be split up in groups by 4-year increment. For example, participants aged between 20 and 24 will compete under the same category.

Athena Division

The Athena division is exclusively for women weighing 150 lbs. and more. However, Athena participants are not eligible for Age Group and Open Division awards.

Clydesdale Division

This division is only exclusive for men who weigh 200 lbs. and more. However, participants from this category are not eligible for Age Group and Open Division awards.
